Graveyards and haunted venues attract! A derelict house gains a reputation based on its appearance, a weathered angel shakes its fist at the elements, a skull lurks by the feet of visitors to a church in an historic village. A visit may be planned or one of those spur-of -the-moment occasions, whereby we chance upon a gem, such as William Tyndale’s plaque in the church of St John the Evangelist at Slimbridge.
Planned visits are sometimes very brief, on account of oppressive atmospheres. The Ancient Ram Inn at Wotton has form, residues of which linger in its vicinity. Likewise, the dark interior of St Mary’s at Prestbury is not one to loiter in: the usual soothing balm of a church is absent here. At both, the urge to flee overwhelmed us.
